AN IMPORTANT UPDATE
Dear Salt & Vinegar Community Members,
Unfortunately, the time has come to close the doors on Salt & Vinegar's 9th Street location. While this has been a very difficult decision, I am thrilled to tell you more about the new ways we’ll be supporting the local food community in Philadelphia. Keep reading!
Knowing that this little shop was supposed to just be a one month holiday pop-up back in 2022 and we made it this far and were recognized and lauded by so many gives me so much joy. That we were the first shelf for several brands and served as an integral part of growing so many local and independent products run by women, immigrants and people of color - providing guidance, advice, exposure and creating new customers along the way - fills my heart with so much happiness and gratitude.
Over the past year and a half, in addition to running the shop I have been serving as the Publisher of Edible Philly magazine. My passion has always been in sharing the stories of our local food community and finding ways to support them and I’m eager to have more time to do so as I step away from day-to-day retail shop operations. This is why I am teaming up with Philly Foodworks, an online farmers market, to help serve my customers at Salt & Vinegar so I can do what I love.: telling the stories of our local producers. More about Philly Foodworks below, but I think you are going to love them, plus when you shop with them 10% of your sales go towards supporting Edible Philly’s work in local food.
Our last official day will be Sunday, March 16th and we’ll look to go out with a big celebration that weekend. I do hope you will all come and visit us over the next month to share stories, shop your favorite local brands and say goodbye to my incredible team. I could not have gotten here without their support and stellar teamwork, or without the support of so many of our neighbors in the Market,
Huge thanks to Steve and the entire Gleaner’s staff of rock stars, Michael Anastasi Produce, Dave and the team at Alice, Anthony’s staff next door, the good guys at Paesano’s, the cheese and wine nerds at Di Bruno Bros, Catie at Binding Agents, The Mad Collective, Michelle Ortiz and the Our Market Project, Streats of Philadelphia Tours, Tiny Table Tours, and many more. Not to mention the ongoing support and commiseration with so many other independent Philly retail shops like Civil Stock, Ours, Bodie, Herman’s and The Indie Shelf.
We’ve also been honored to be recognized as a Best of Philly 2023 winner, as well as being featured on so many media outlets for our partnership with local brands, pop ups in Ventnor with FIsh & Whistle, at Dilworth Park, at Reading Terminal Market with the Sisterly Love Collective and Les Dames d’Escoffier Philadelphia chapter, our collaborations with Flakely, The Deli Collective, Wallace Dry Goods and so many more.
WHAT’S NEXT?
Supporting local brands has been at the cornerstone of our mission for the past 2+ years and so I’m thrilled to share with you another incredible, mission-focused local company with this same commitment. Philly Foodworks is an online market and farm share program that is dedicated to creating a sustainable local food system for the Greater Philadelphia region. They make high-quality, sustainably produced food available to consumers year-round without a subscription or extra fees. You’ll find many of our favorites from our shelves in their online marketplace, which you’ll now be able to have delivered to your home each week. Look for Salt & Vinegar staples like Keepwell Vinegar, Bandit Cheese, Burlap & Barrel and Aaji’s to name a few, as well as fresh produce, meat, dairy, and more. And to get you started, they’re offering our valued and loyal customers a special discount of $15 off your first order. Learn more and browse their local marketplace at the link in our bio.
This isn’t the end of Salt & Vinegar as we know it just yet - I'm leaving the door open for pop ups, collaborations and special events in the future. So please be sure to sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop.
THANK YOU! From the bottom of my heart.
With so much love and gratitude,
Jen Herczeg
